Help Pave the Way to our New Tournament Facility
On behalf of the thousands of individuals who will benefit from your support, thank you for considering a gift to bring this project to fruition. This is a unique moment during which you have the opportunity to create a legacy, not only for Fargo's growth and development, but for our youth of today and tomorrow.
Today we are celebrating the hard word, dedication and success of the community champions who came together to realize the mission and vision of the Metro Sports Foundation. Their work secured the local bank financing to open the doors of the Urban Plains Center and complete Phase I, a state of the art hockey and sporting facility.
The facility's main sheet of ice introduces our community to Junior Hockey's highest level of play; the United States Hockey League (USHL) and the Fargo Force. It also hosts local high school practices and games as well as local youth hockey practices and games. In addition, the Urban Plains Center accommodates a variety of other events, including major youth and high school hockey tournaments, open skating, men's and women's league games as well as other sporting events throughout the year.
Most importantly, it provides the youth of our region access to a first-class facility.
However, the goal is only half complete. Success for us is to complete an additional four sheets of ice of our youth. The capital campaign for Phase II, the Urban Plains Center Tournament Facility has begun and its completion requires your help. Construction of the $12 million facility will begin when we reach our goal of $6 million in private support.
With your support, these additional four sheets of ice will be utilized by the Fargo area youth hockey teams as well as the Fargo area high school varsity boys' and girls' hockey teams for practices and games. It will eliminate 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. practices for our kids and will host up to 19 youth hockey tournaments a year with the probability of additional state volleyball and Eastern Dakota Conference basketball tournaments.
The revenues from these activities will provide for future programming needs and subsidize costs to participate leading to greater accessibility for all of Fargo's youth. We will also have the potential to support projects such as the much needed renovations to the Coliseum and other Park District facilities.
There are many residual benefits for the community within this notable hockey project that have not yet been mentioned. The completion of the Tournament Facility and its four sheets of ice would help do the following:
- For the Park District
It would mean that the Sports Arena can be converted to a dry surface, which would meet the overwhelming need for space to hold youth volleyball practices and tournaments.
- For the Kennel Club of Fargo-Moorhead
It would re-purpose space in the Sunmart Arena, The current tenants, the Fargo Angles, would move the majority of their ice rental for games and practices to the new facilities.
- For the taxpayers of Fargo
They would not be burdened with either the costs of renovation of the Coliseum at an estimated $8 million or a new sheet of ice estimated at $4 million at Davies High School.
- For our retail, entertainment, hotel and restaurant establishments
It would provide at least $4.3 million of revenue generated from the ability to hold new and more state, regional and nationwide conventions, sporting events and tournaments. This is based on 32 team tournaments per year with average of $600 spending per family per weekend.
